The map of imagination

This was taken on Great Keppel Island, Queensland, Australia, June 2008. This is the only tropical island I've been on - you can arrive on the boat at about 10.30 and then it lands up again on the sand at 4pm to take you away. There's some holiday homes, lots of bush and beach, a small airstrip in the middle and a few shops - there used to be a little "resort" but I arrived this time to find it occupied only by the lorikeets (and presumably, spiders, but I didn't venture in that far). The "hotel" was closed for refurfbishment too. So I imagine why the resort map is being left to your own discovery and imagination...

Information - moss

This was taken in July 2005 in the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, Kyoto, Japan. They had boxes with all different kinds of moss, with labels. As I don't speak Japanese I obviously couldn't tell what the names were, but nevertheless the way the mosses were presented did highlight differences in mossiness that otherwise I might not have noticed. Presumably the one at the front was an Ex Moss.

Worcestershire Beacon

This is a photo I did take with the theme "Information" in mind. It was taken in the Malvern hills earlier this year. I felt there were two kinds of information here. The first is the information on the map in the foreground, that has a depiction of landmarks and helps you to identify named hills and other features. The second is the information from the landscape itself: from this height you get an idea of how much is populated, what the characteristics of the land are, also more of a feel for what weather might be coming along. It was one of the photos that I liked the most of the ones I took in Malvern.

Audioguide information

This isn't one I took specifically for the "Information" theme but it's an earlier photo I thought would fit. It's people visiting the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain, in September 2006. The audioguides were given out when you got your ticket and most people used them. When I looked round me, visitors seemed absorbed in the information from the audioguides, rather than the experience of the museum (though perhaps I looked the same). Looking at it now, after being in Second Life, they've got that SL vacant stare and odd unsocial arrangement, with no-one quite facing each other.

More of the same ... with a Russian newspaper ... what fun one can have in the library!

I'm quite proud of the title of this photo - if not the photo itself. Its supposed to be a contribution to the theme of "information".

Two meetings so far

There have been two meetings of the photography club so far, the last one was in December. Now that blog has been set up under "New Blogger" hopefully other people will come on board and perhaps post some of their photographs. The one on the right was taken by me, and is the University of Sheffield "Information Commons" construction site, in November 2006.
